In the book, Black Boy, I don't believe that Richard is a bad child. I think Richard is more of a trouble maker opposed to a bad boy. When you look at the kids that beat him up, they in my opinion would be considered bad boys. Richard is young and hasn't completely learned the difference between right and wrong. Also, half of the situations he gets stuck in are because of his parents being so strict and not letting him explore childhood. Therefore, he becomes curious and bends the rules against his parents wishes. Richard stirs things up occasionally, but he is learning from his mistakes. Although, Richard wasn't the cause of some of his beatings, he was defiantly the cause of others. The ones that Richard cannot control should not be blamed on him. An example of this is when Richard went to school and learned all of those bad words. It wasn't his fault, it was the environment he was placed in. Also, when those kids stole his money, it wasn't his fault that it happened. In both of those events, I think it was based on the environment and Richard should not have been beaten. When Richard set the curtains on fire, he was one hundred percent responsible for those actions and deserved a consequence. In my opinion, Richard is a young boy that is still learning and is not the cause of everything horrible that seems to be his fault.

Kenzie,
I completely agree with you that Richard is not a bad boy. On the contrary I disagree that his parents are too strict with him. In my opinion his parents are doing exactly what they should be doing in order to teach him right from wrong. If they let him get away with everything, he won't understand what is acceptable and what is not acceptable.

I also agree with you that Richard tends to be at the wrong place at the wrong time. I also think that his parents were way too strick with him. It's one thing to teach a child the difference between right and wrong, but beating them for it? I think that is out of line.

I like your view on how Richard isn't necessarily a 'bad boy' but rather a boy that does some bad things. I disagree with you Amanda, I believe the beatings have gotten out of hand. I know it was a different time back then but I think by beating Richard so often he thinks violence isn't a big deal, and starts fights of his own.
I agree that setting their house on fire should be punishable to great extents, after all he should know better even though he's young. I also like how you said he's in the wrong place at the wrong time, because it is constantly true. Richard is just a young boy, trying to cope, but he just doesn't know right from wrong.
